FCBS Programme for School Students

Under the school programme, special lectures were organized to expose school students to some of the challenging areas in science of contemporary interest. For operational reasons, the programme was held in St. Thomas School, Trivandrum to begin with and was restricted to about 100 students. The resource people for giving lectures were mostly from NIIST and other Scientific Institutions in Trivandrum. The lectures were held on every third Saturday of the month during June 2005 to January 2006. Similar programmes were conducted during February 2006 to January 2007, February 2007 to January 2008 and September 2008 to January 2009. In 2009 the programme was held in two other schools, namely Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom and Christ Nagar Senior Secondary Schools, Thiruvallam. Students who successfully participated in the programme were presented with certificates and also in some years a copy each of the book on “Learning Science”, authored by Professor C.N.R. Rao and Mrs. Indumati Rao. We hope to enlarge this programme to cover other schools, in future.

Trivandrum Science Lecture

Professor C.N.R. Rao and Mrs. Indumati Rao have volunteered to support a public lecture series in Trivandrum to be given by distinguished scientists. The first lecture in this series was given by Professor Alan Heeger from University of California, Santa Barbara, USA on February 23, 2005 in RRL Trivandrum.

Special Lectures on Science for School Students and Teachers

Special lectures on “Learning Science” were arranged for the benefit of schools students and their science teachers under FCBS auspices. These lectures were given by Professor C.N.R Rao, followed by multimedia presentations by Mrs. Indumati Rao. These lectures were organized on Monday, December 03, 2007, Monday, October 13, 2008 and Thursday, October 29, 2009 in Hotel Residency Tower. Nearly 300 students and their teachers from different schools in Trivandrum attended each of these lectures. All theses lectures were well received by the school students and teachers.

A special lecture and interactive session with Professor Alan Heeger was held in St. Thomas School, Trivandrum, on February 24, 2005, for the 9th and 11th grade students of that school.

A special lecture on the “Strange and Beautiful World of Quantum Mechanics” by Professor K. L. Sebastian of the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, IISc, Bangalore was arranged in St. Thomas School, Trivandrum for the benefit of 11th  grade students on Monday, November 05, 2007. Nearly 200 students attended this lecture. Professor Sebastian gave a lucid and clear lecture on Quantum mechanics and tried to emphasize basic concepts.

FCBS Lectures in Colleges

For the benefit of post-graduate students, FCBS lectures were organized at different colleges in Kerala. These lectures were arranged on the invitation of the individual colleges and were attended by about 150 to 200 post-graduate students in each case. The resource people for these lectures were mostly drawn from IISc, Bangalore and NIIST, Trivandrum. These lectures were well received by the students and members of the teaching community (See Annexure 2.1).

JNCASR – FCBS Workshops for College Chemistry Post-graduate Students and Teachers

For the benefit of college chemistry post-graduate students and teachers, regular workshops were arranged under the joint auspices of JNCASR, Bangalore and FCBS, Trivandrum, to expose them to newer developments in science. We have organized, by now, eleven workshops. Each of these workshops was of three days duration and attended by nearly 150 college chemistry post-graduate students and teachers. The inaugural lectures in theses workshops were given by Professor C.N.R. Rao. The resource persons for each of these workshops included some of the active scientists of this country. Theses workshops were of great help to both students and teachers who participated in them. These workshops were generously supported by JNCASR (See Annexure 2.2).
